Engage作及物动词时还是比较直截了当的

1. 雇佣 聘请 hire or employ 比如，we’ve recently engaged a cleaner. He was engaged as a English tutor.

2. 全神贯注于...吸引，比如, Her work engages her completely. They never learned skills to engage the attention of the others.

3. 正面与敌人开展对打engage the enemy

上面都是简单用法，下面的例句开始使人迷糊了，

1 Engage作动词 后面跟in or with

If you engage in an activity, you do it or are actively involved with it.

例如：It is important for children to have time to engage in family activities. （参与家庭活动，比如当父母的小帮手打扫卫生之类的事）

Engage with 人，是指互动的意思。比如：Mohammad has made more efforts to engage with the media and make public appearances than his predecessors。

2 be+engaged in 形式，engaged是形容词，表示一种状态，比如下面几个例句：China’s military has been engaged in a rapid transformation over the past decade.

France, home to Europe’s largest Muslim community, was engaged in a war against Islamist ideology and more militant attacks were likely.

The UAE is engaged in an aggressive testing campaign.

For years, Trump has engaged in behavior that makes Russian president Vladimir Putin’s job of sowing discord, spreading disinformation and undermining our democracy a lot easier.

这几个例子都可以翻译成“从事”或“忙于”。

注意到没，be engaged in 和be involved in 有点类似啊？ 一般的解释是前者是主动的参与或从事某项活动，后者有一点被动的意思。其实也不完全是这样，只能具体情况具体分析了。
